Shorea Wood
Each Claude Pickens item is made of a Southeast Asian wood called Shorea, which makes them a wonderful investment. Shorea is similar to teak, but is stronger and heavier. Shorea is resistant to rot and weathers gray when left outdoors for a long period of time. Claude Pickens furniture is constructed using mortise-and-tension joinery. This method ensures a tight solid joint, which contributes to its strength and durability. It also creates a life span three to four times longer than furniture using bolts and screws. With certain exceptions where stainless or hardened steel is required, all hardware used in Claude Pickens furniture is made of brass.

Care of Shorea Furniture
Shorea has similar properties to teakwood. However, it is much denser so occasional cracks and crazing can be a little more apparent, although the structure will not be affected. Some roughness can occur during wet weather when the furniture is first left in the open, but this will subside and become smooth as the furniture weathers. If placing the furniture on a tile, slate, concrete or brick patio, it should be hosed or sprayed down to remove sawdust, which can cause staining after a rainstorm. If placing permanently under a canopy or closed in porch, application of teak oil is recommended to prevent unsightly stains from spilled drinks, etc... The furniture will be produced without any type of finish being applied. Shorea can be painted at the customer's risk, with certain kinds of stains or paints. The furniture should be thoroughly washed with a household detergent before such applications.
